Service Description: The Board of Assessors is responsible for maintaining all appraised values for property tax purposes at current market levels as of each January 1. Annual preparation of the tax rolls and tax rate setting are primary services. To this end, deed, building permit and field review information is collected. Sales, property characteristic, ownership, legal description and mapping files are created for valuation development and public information purposes. The Board of Assessors also administers statutory agricultural, charitable and property tax exemption programs as well as property tax and motor vehicle abatement services.

 

All Assessors must attend the Department of Revenue's Course 101 "Assessment Administration: Law, Procedure and Validation."

A majority of the Board of Assessors must attend the Department of Revenue's "Classification Training Workshop."  (All three assessors have completed this workshop)

In addition to the required courses, Assessors can continue their education attending courses offered by the Massachusetts Association of Assessing Officers.  Linda Bevan is certified as a Massachusetts Accredited Assessor (M.A.A).  This certification requires the successful completion of six courses in addition to the two required courses provided by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

Linda has been employed by the Town of Winchendon in the Assessors department for 29 years.
