May 6th Town Ballot Question Regarding Unaccepted Roads

The May 6th Town ballot for the election of Selectmen, School Committee, and other elected offices will also include a ballot question seeking a decision by voters whether or not to continue to plow and sand unaccepted roads.

Currently, there are six unaccepted roads that the Town plowed and sanded during the winter for, in some cases, over 30 years.  The Town does not perform any other maintenance during the year.  Last fall, Town staff determined that the ballot question requesting voter approval to plow and sand unaccepted roads was never presented to the voters; this year’s ballot includes that question.

Continuing to plow and sand the six unaccepted streets will not increase the Town’s Snow and Ice budget.  As mentioned earlier, the Town has been providing this service for decades.  This question is being raised to legitimize an existing practice.

The Board of Selectmen support the approval of this ballot question and hope voters will take a few minutes on May 6th to cast your vote at this year’s Town election.  The polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Old Murdock Senior Center, 52 Murdock Avenue.
